The History
This historic building was home to Chavers-Fowhand Furniture Store. Its massive cascading sign was a prominent feature of Harrison Avenue and was later purchased by a local photographer and collector who used it to store classic cars and keepsakes. Our mission is to restore and preserve this Panama City icon and breathe new life into its legacy.
Historic Downtown Panama City, FL is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Everywhere you look you’ll see new construction, renovation, historic preservation, and new businesses opening their doors. Since Hurricane Michael devastated our town in 2018 there has been a renewed sense of hope and determination sweeping through our community and the reimagining of The Mashburn Building is just one of the chapters of our town’s comeback story.
The Name
We named this building after Jack Mashburn, a beloved citizen of our community. At the age of 22, Mr. Mashburn was elected to the Florida House and he helped create the first park for black beachgoers in the South right here in Bay County, at St. Andrews State Park. This progression led by Mashburn—a full year before the Supreme Court voted to desegregate schools—was so controversial he lost his seat in the Florida House for it. He is quoted saying “I told them what my father told me: always do what is right, regardless of personal consequences.”
Later in life, Jack was known to drop off magnolia flowers at friends' houses and businesses around the community. His love for this community never stopped. Jack Mashburn passed away in 2017.
